Hi All, What languages do you speak? Is English your first language? Well, English is mine. I took a bit of German in fourth grade, my whole class did, because my teacher hired a German woman to teach us some. It was fun, and I learned a lot. Forgot it all now, though. But now I'm in French, this is my third year. Technically second, because two years iin middle school is equal to one high school year. But yeah. i love French. I'm so shocked at how much I can say in it now, though I'm far from fluent. So what's your story? Lol... Caitlin

I speak English (of course) and French. I took four years of it and finished up in sophemore year. I like the language, and might continue in college, or maybe go onto Spanish or Latin. Latin's so pretty.

Lucky for me, I'm in Chorus, so I sing in a bunch of different languages and I enjoy it. It's challenging but fun. I don't know how long I'll stay in French. I love it, but it is a challenge. I hope to stay with it for as long as I can, and as long as i enjoy it. Caitlin

I speak english as a first language. I know quite a bit of french, but being out of the class sorta is making me loose it. I also know a little bit of japanese as well, thanks to my friend and her trusty japanese/english dictionary

Strangely enough, English is my second language. I grew up speaking Spanish, 'til I started going to school, and that's where I learned my English. I speak, read, and write better in English now than I do in Spanish. How sad is that!

Post 7 by hawaiianheart (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 28-Dec-2004 19:29:13

Like everyone else, English is my first language, too :) i've taken French throughout grade school, and I really enjoyed it. I thought about taking the immersion program in Junior High, but I changed my mind because I had this belief that I wasn't going to do well in it, lol! I know a lot of different words for different languages, and I've actually taken the time and patients to learn Hawaiian (which I am still not fluent in today). I know a bit of the native language too :)

Post 8 by wonderwoman (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 28-Dec-2004 20:24:18

I took about 3 years of french in high school, but I didn't learn a whole lot of it, and it was so long ago, I've forgotten it all now. I started taking German a few years ago on cassette tapes, but those tapes you buy in the store isn't a good way to learn another language, because there is very little, or even no english translation at all, and although I learned some, I just couldn't get my vocabulary up. I was listening to ashortwave broadcast station in German once, and I could only get a word here, a few words there. A man was talking about someone being put in the hospital, and my poor german translated it to, hisarm had been put in the hospital, lol, that's really bad. I just gave up on it, because there was no way I could build my vocabulary.

Wonderwoman: German sounds like a really interesting language to learn. My uncle (through marriage) is German. He grew up there his whole life and he moved here about 3 years before I was born, lol! He and my aunt are no longer married though, but he taught me a few words.

Hi Hawaiian heart, German is interesting, but very difficult, but so is French. I think they're difficult because the verbs and nouns are backwards from english. I had this wonderful idea, that I was going to take one language at a time, and when I had learned all I could of one language, I was going to tackle another, but it just didn't work that way, though the idea was wonderful while it lasted. Some of you ought to try Japanese for a challenge. It takes just about all day to say thank you. The reason I started trying the languages thing was, because I use to be in amateur radio, and I use to talk to a woman who is German, and she taught me a few words, and I could repeat them ok, so I just thought it would be neat, listening to a conversation in another language, and being able to understand what was being said, but it just didn't work.

Post 22 by Caitlin (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Thursday, 30-Dec-2004 20:48:53

Also, if you do badly in a class for languages, doesn't mean you're bad at the language. Because sometimes the tests and work etc don't really reflect how well you do at a language. So even if you didn't do well in the class doesn't matter, becausey ou coudl be great at the language tiself. Just something I learned/figured out / was told.

English is not my first language, unfortunately, hell my real name isn't even in English. My first language is Cantonese Chinese. I am a first generation here, but I am rather americanized, speak
English with very little trace of an accent, and live mostly like an american.
